General Dress Questions
1. WHY SHOULD I PRESERVE MY GOWN?
A wedding gown is a garment of high financial and emotional value that can become an important symbol of your marriage and family over time. Cleaning and properly storing your dress ensures that it will last the test of time. We work to ensure a dress can be passed down to the next generation or transformed into keepsake gifts using our Redesign the Dress service when the time is right.
2. HOW DOES A STORE THE DRESS MEMBERSHIP PROTECT MY DRESS?
Top-quality preservation materials are used in the storing of your dress. In addition, your dress will be housed in our climate controlled and secure storage facility that will protect your dress from potential sun damage, dust, mold, mildew, pests, water damage, and general yellowing.
3. HOW WILL MY DRESS BE STORED?
With our primary membership, your dress will be hung in a top quality muslin garment bag made of acid-free materials. This type of preservation is commonly used by museums when archiving and protecting specialty or couture garments, so you can rest easy knowing it is a method you can trust for something as important as your wedding gown.
When upgrading to premium membership, your dress will be stored in a new, traditional wedding dress preservation chest that becomes yours to keep. Your membership also includes one complimentary check-out per year.
4. CAN I ALSO STORE MY BRIDAL ACCESSORIES?
The storing of one veil or headpiece is included in both levels of membership.
Are you a newlywed?
1. MY DRESS HAS A LONG TRAIN; CAN I STILL STORE IT USING THE PRIMARY MEMBERSHIP?
Yes! To properly preserve your train, our team of caretakers will un-bustle the fabric, roll it in acid-free tissue and store the train in the bottom of your garment bag.
2. MY DRESS IS STRAPLESS; CAN I STILL STORE IT USING THE PRIMARY MEMBERSHIP?
Yes! Our caretakers will simply sew in muslin straps to evenly distribute the weight of your gown on your covered hanger. These straps can easily be removed in the future and will not damage your gown.
3. SHOULD I HAVE MY GOWN CLEANED BEFORE IT IS PRESERVED?
Our team highly recommends that your dress is cleaned before it is preserved. Often, stains from food, drink or perspiration that are subtle or invisible can set-in and become permanent over time if not cleaned immediately. You are welcomed to have your dress cleaned in advance of sending it to our studio, or for your convenience, we also offer a package that includes dry cleaning.
4. WILL MY DRESS YELLOW OVER TIME?
Unfortunately, some fabrics do tend to yellow over time more so than others. Specifically, some silk and nylon will be more prone to yellowing slightly over time. However, cleaning and properly preserving your gown will prevent heavy yellowing. A wedding dress should not be stored in any type of plastic bag or bin, as this can accelerate the yellowing process.
Have a dress worn before 1990?
1. I HAVE AN OLDER GOWN THAT WAS NEVER PROPERLY STORED. DOES IT NEED TO BE CLEANED?
At Unbox the Dress, our Dress Caretakers love working with older gowns. It’s our specialty! Simply select your desired level of membership and send us your dress. Once your dress arrives, we will review its condition and recommend dry cleaning if necessary.
2. I HAVE AN OLDER GOWN THAT'S BEEN PRESERVED IN A BOX. WHAT LEVEL OF MEMBERSHIP SHOULD I SELECT?
After your dress arrives to our studio, our team of caretakers will remove it from its preservation box and inspect its condition. This step allows us to ensure that there is no mold or mildew in the box, and helps mitigate any long-term damage from deep-set creases. Consider it a little check up for your dress!
Afterward, we can return your dress to your box if all is good condition, or your dress will be stored in our muslin garment bags as part of our primary membership if damage is found to your original box. You may also upgrade to a new preservation chest with premium membership.
3. I HAVE A DRESS THAT HAS SOME HEAVY DAMAGE OR DISCOLORATION (GREATER THAN 40%) – DO YOU OFFER DRESS RESTORATION?
Our team loves working with older wedding gowns, and our Redesign the Dress service allows women to transform dresses from all decades (and of varying quality) into heirloom gifts. However, we do not specifically offer total dress restoration.
Damage to an older gown should not discourage you from working with our team, as we would be happy to consult with you on finding the right solution for your dress storage and redesign needs!
4. WHEN I'M READY TO REDESIGN MY DRESS INTO KEEPSAKES, HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?
Once your membership is active, you can start the dress redesign process at any time free of charge. Simply let our team know and we will start the fun, exciting process with you! Leftover fabric can be returned to storage for a lower monthly fee, or shipped back to you.
5. CAN I CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP AT ANY TIME?
Store the Dress memberships are billed annually. You will be notified 30 days prior to your annual billing and can cancel your membership without penalty at that time. If you’d like to cancel during the year, a $40 processing fee will apply. Your dress will be returned to your address of choice.
6. CAN I STORE MORE THAN ONE DRESS?
You are welcome to store more than one dress under the same client account. Monthly discounts for more than one gown are available upon request.
